Young's guns battle through to win coveted cup
RUGBY LEAGUE: The future of Gladstone rugby league was there for all to see when Gladstone Wallabys achieved what the players and coach Tim Young will remember for a lifetime.
Wallabys have won its first-ever Gorden Tallis Cup after it defeated Cairns Brothers 16-12 in a pulsating grand final in Townsville.
Wallabys scored the final two tries with the sealer from Gavin Wilson-Tyres after Brothers threatened to win.
Young was a little tired himself from overnight celebrations and he spoke with The Observer yesterday.
"It was a very fast game and up to that game we only had three tries scored against us over the weekend and they scored three," he said.
"The kids were very tired and exhausted."
Wallabys scored the first try and Cairns responded. Young said whatever team scores the first try wins the game if the end result is a draw.
"There was like two tries in the first two minutes and it tightened up after that.
"They scored another one to hit the lead and then by the end both teams were tiring and our big fellas started busting them through," he said.
"We scored two more tries and they had to score twice to beat us."
In the lead-up matches, Gladstone Wallabys overcame two teams from Brisbane plus last year's runner-up Proserpine. It was also sweet revenge for Young's youngsters in the first final.
"It was against the team that knocked us out of the carnival last year and it was a nil-all draw, but we got the first penalty and won by that," he said.
He added the lead-up games prepared the boys for the finals, but almost "broke" them.
Thankfully Wallabys had just enough juice left to make it count when it mattered.
