Beer and beautiful art on tap at Young Oz Hotel

YOU may associate the Young Oz Hotel with a quality meal for a decent price, or sharing a few beers with mates.

But now it is also an impressive art space.

If you have been in the dining room area since Saturday, November 9, you may have noticed a little more colour.

Local artist and regular lunch guest at the hotel, Linda Bailey is the face behind the paintings.

Managers Michelle Szpunar and Cameron Stewart were approached by the artist after she contemplated the empty wall space.

"The paintings were just sitting in her shed and she wanted somewhere to hang them," Ms Szpunar said.

Mr Stewart explained Linda came to the hotel regularly for lunch and she had noticed the empty wall space.

"It was a no-brainer really," he said.

So, now patrons of the hotel can buy more than just food and drinks. They can also buy a beautiful piece of local art.

Linda's paintings range in price from $250-$400, depending on the size. And there's no denying they add colour and something a bit different to the dining area.

"My paintings are unique. They are all entirely different," Linda said.

Linda said she had been painting for as long as she could remember, but had never had her paintings hung in a public place.

"It's a lovely idea. It's almost like an art gallery with all the wall space," Linda said. "It's great that they are supporting the community. It's what Gladstone is all about."

Mr Stewart said it was the first time the Young Oz had utilised its wall space in this way.

"We were very excited when Linda approached us," he said. "The next reaction was shock, when we saw how big they are!

"But it's amazing, the amount of people that walk around looking at them."

He said the first painting sold the Saturday morning it went up.

Linda said this was another way the hotel, which sponsors AFL team the Mudcrabs and South's Hockey Club, supported the community.
