Young gun races home in festival fun run

JAYDEN Mills showed a strong determination at this year's Gladstone Harbour Festival Hub Fitness Fun Run.

The 12-year-old was the 3km race winner on Friday morning, completing it in just over 10 minutes.

Despite only seriously training for school cross country races this year, mother Chelsea Mills said Jayden was quite the athlete.

"He trains three times a week with Geoff Hardwicke plus more at school," she said.

"It's his first time racing in Gladstone as we've just moved to Rockhampton 12 months ago."

Jayden said the win felt pretty good.

"It feels great to beat some of the older guys that have been training for years," he said.

"I ran cross country yesterday so today was just to get the legs moving again."

Jayden's younger brother Dylan,11, also ran the 3km, completing it in 12 minutes 34 seconds.

The 10km race winner was Michael McGrath.

Although he declined to comment on his win he did thank all the volunteers.

Race partners and long-time friends of Mr McGrath, Kaylene and Gavin Vendall, said he'd been in fine form as of late.

"We're all part of the Rocky runners group and the three of us are actually taking a trip in a few weeks to participate in the Boston marathon," Mrs Vendall said.

"Today's race is us paying our annual pilgrimage."

Doing it for the ladies, the 10km female winner was 20-year-old Emily Barton.

Miss Barton said she was pleasantly surprised by the win but has put in a lot of effort.

"I've been taking running seriously for a couple of years," she said.

"I was shocked I won and all that was going through was water."

The young gun said she trains six days a week with her family, all runners as well.
