Yaralla FC marks 40 years with night of celebration

SITTING atop the Gladstone Men's First Division table in any year is great, but for Yaralla Football Club, their position at the pinnacle is extra special.

It comes in the year they arrive at the 40-year mark, a very special and impressive milestone.

In recognition of the occasion, long-time Yaralla member Paul Lester has organised an anniversary night to celebrate the history of the club.

Founded way back in 1973, Yaralla actually began as Wapentake Soccer Club, before changing its name again to QASC Soccer Club in 1983.

"We have had a few name changes and we started as a small workers club," Lester said.

It was not until 1992 that Yaralla took its current name, and has enjoyed more than 20 years of success since.

Around 100 current and former players, coaches and members are expected to attend the night, which is to be held at the Yaralla Sports Club function room.

"A few life members are coming, at least three that I know of, one of them even from Brisbane," Lester said.

"All we are really trying to do is get everyone back and involved."

The night will be a great chance for former players to reminisce about the club's history, and also share memories from days gone by.

The inclusion of memorabilia and a decade by decade reliving of the Yaralla Club is set to be centre stage at the black-tie event.

"There are speeches and a celebration of the club from back when it first began right up until now," said Lester, who has been involved with Yaralla since 1988.

"It will hopefully also be good for the teams around now to take some extra pride from knowing the history of the club."

A Best of Yaralla side from across its entire history is going to be unveiled at the anniversary dinner.

Anybody with any information that can assist in piecing together the entire history of the club is urged to send it to Lester or someone else involved with the club.

Old trophies, playing strips, newspaper clippings and newsletters will be on display.
