Win-loss, loss-win season continues as Capras head to MBO
RUGBY LEAGUE: Central Queensland Capras evened their win-loss record with an emphatic 28-18 win against Ipswich Jets on Thursday night at Browne Park in Rockhampton.
In a pre-Easter special, Capras got the chocolates, but not before a scare when the hosts led 10-0 at half-time.
But the Jets roared back with 18 straight points with just 10 minutes left.
Capras lock Jamie Hill gave his team back the momentum and the successful conversion iced the game.
Prop Bill Cullen and centres Connor Broadhurst and Nathan Bassani were standouts for the home side.
Cullen scored the first points of the game with a ruthless charge in the third minute while Broadhurst, who amassed 12 points over the course of the game, backed up to score again in the 16th minute for an early 10-0 advantage.
Former Capra Michael Purcell instigated Ipswich's fight-back in the second half.
'Kangaroo Catcher' Purcell almost set up one spectacular try for the Jets by supporting his team-mates and bursting through the middle at the start of the second half.
While the try didn't eventuate, he made most on a Zeik Foster error when the Capras' full-back dropped a high ball.
The match proved that one can make up for mistakes and Foster did just that when he scored a try of his own in similar circumstances.
Amid the to-and-fro, quirky Capras character Billy Gilbert also notched a four-pointer in controversial circumstance by diving on a loose ball.
In the dying minutes Ipswich had several chances to steal back the ascendancy, but were cruelled through poor handling and penalties.
Backrower Hill put the result beyond doubt as the clock wound down, borrowing back into the ruck and showing impressive strength to crash over, much to the jubilation of home fans.
Capras travel to Gladstone's Marley Brown Oval to take on Burleigh Bears tomorrow week from 11.45am.
