Artists wow crowd before film fest at botanic gardens

IT WAS a waning moon that Gladstone residents sat under at Saturday night's Flix in the Stix event at Tondoon Botanic Gardens.

So pretty was the night sky that it distracted The Whitlams' singer Tim Freedman from his lyrics, declaring they restart the song.

About 300 people attended, many settling on the grass with picnics packed in eskies and with blankets and pillows, while those in the VIP section enjoyed beanbags.

Australian poet Murray Hartin wowed the crowd with his talent and captivating stories, showing that poetry is not dead - you just need a knack for Aussie vernacular.

A number of independent short films followed, ranging from the downright weird to the ridiculously funny.

Finally The Whitlams kicked off the musical section, charming the crowd with their casual onstage demeanour.

Locals were cheered on as they ventured forward to dance.

Overall it was a successful night with the community turning out to support this roadshow event.
