Captain Cook 1770 Festival

THE annual Captain Cook 1770 Festival commemorates the landing of Lieutenant James Cook on 24 May, 1770 at Bustard Bay.

The award winning festival will be held at the SES Grounds at Seventeen Seventy over the weekend and caters for the whole family with live entertainment, market stalls, amusement rides, a spectacular fireworks display on Saturday night and more.

The re-enactment of Captain Cook landing is a special highlight of the festival which this year will be held on the Friday night prior to the Festival at the Air Sea Rescue Park (1770 Foreshore). More here.

Performance of Tim Winton's The Deep

SET in a typical Tim Winton world of beach and sea, The Deep is about a little girl named Alice who must overcome her fear of swimming in the ocean.

Watching from the jetty, Alice shuns the encouragement from her family, too scared to swim where the ocean turns from green into blue. Until one day, a friendly dolphin appears and Alice forgets to be scared and just swims.

The Deep mixes beach culture comedy with exquisite puppetry in a highly entertaining live theatre experience.

The show is part of the 2014 Schools Program. Surplus seats will be available to the general public. Phone the Gladstone Entertainment Centre box office on 4972 2822 for details.

The show starts at 10am.

Smooth sounds at RGs

SOLO artist Carl Wockner will play at the Rocky Glen Hotel from 8pm.

Wockner has established himself as an up-and-coming home-grown artist, blessed with glorious dreadlocks and a sound something like John Mayer, Ben Harper or David Gray with hints of Donavon Frankenreiter or Newton Faulkner.
