Weekly rents fall in mining areas, rise in other regions

THE average weekly rent for a three-bedroom house in the mining regions of Mackay, Gladstone and Roma has fallen in the past year, according to a report by the Residential Tenancies Authority.

The report, which was tabled in Queensland Parliament on Tuesday, shows the average weekly rent in Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Sunshine Coast, Hervey Bay, Ipswich and Toowoomba had risen over the same period.

Traditionally, the most expensive areas in terms of rents in south-east Queensland are Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.

The same report found the average weekly rent for a two-bedroom unit in Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba had risen between June 2012 and June 2013.

Two bedroom units in Mackay, Roma and Ipswich fell over the same period.

Residential Tenancies Authority general manager Fergus Smith said the organisation had made significant steps over the past year to improve client services.

"This financial year we responded successfully to a significant increase in client demand," he said.

"I am proud that our staff continued to deliver high quality client services even with a 13% year-on-year rise in phone enquiries and a record number of dispute resolution requests."
