'Wattle' Australia think of Brandon's dress?
DALBY'S Brandon Bazley is foregoing a career in farming, instead pursuing his passion for fashion.
Mr Bazley, who now lives in Brisbane, has been named as one of four finalists in a national competition to create the costume for The Miss Universe Australia Competition.
His Darling-Downs inspired couture dress took just a few days to design, then another couple to create.
"It's my first from pencil sketch to actual dress design," Mr Bazley said.
"I grew up on the Darling Downs and the dress is influenced by those landscapes and the golden wattle I saw.
"I wanted to create something eye catching that embodied our nation.
"What's more Australian than the wattle and the green and gold colours?"
Mr Bazley was convinced by his mother to enter the competition, being run by the television morning program, Sunrise.
"Mum said 'why not give it a go'," he said.
"I want to study fashion and I had nothing to lose by entering.
"I didn't think I would have a chance; I'm a little fish in a big pond.
"But I drew the sketches in one weekend, submitted them with a rough brief about why I think the dress represents Australia.
"And then I got a call to say I was one of the top four designers."
Mr Bazley said his success in the nation-wide competition cemented his decision to pursue a career in fashion.
"My interest in fashion only came about last year while I was studying performing arts.
"I had always thought I would end up in farming."
