WATCH Jason Hetherington Cup produces the goods
RUGBY LEAGUE: There were plenty of thrills, spills, bumps and bruises in day one of the Jason Hetherington Cup yesterday at Marley Brown Oval.
The Tannum Seagulls and Highfield Eagles produced the goods and the end result could not be split.
Josh McLeish pounced on a gap with just seconds left, which prevented the Eagles securing maximum points.
Seagulls' coach Shayne Fitzgerald was proud as punch after the game.
"He had some good blokes moving outside him which drew the defence out wide and it opened up the hole for him and he did well to get the ball down right on the hooter," he said of Josh's try.
Seagulls' player-of-the-match Ty Fitzgerald put Tannum 4-0 ahead before Tyson Clarkson made the score even and when Drew Fogarty crashed his way to score, it seemed the visitors were to win. But the Seagulls attacked.
"It's only 18 minutes and the boys have to get straight into it and that they did where we got the first try, but the cheap penalties and good field positions, they were able to go down our end," Fitzgerald said.
It ended up as a mixed day with 4-0 and 16-12 wins against North Knights Rockhampton and Yeppoon Seagulls Gold and another 8-all draw against Noosa Pirates.
Tannum take on West Tigers Mackay today at 9.10am. Gladstone Valleys, Gladstone Brothers, Wallabys, Calliope Roosters and Biloela are also in the competition.
