Wallabys' juniors issue call to arms for 2018
RUGBY LEAGUE: Gladstone Wallabys already have an Australian representative on its books and the club are on the hunt for more ahead of the junior season.
Home of Australian Jillaroos' winger Chelsea Baker, Wallabys are trying to recruit a handful of extra players for its Under-12 and U13 teams this season.
The club has 10-11 players at the moment in each grade, but club president Darren Martin is encouraging more to join the club's ranks.
"They are a great little core group of kids, we just need more numbers to help them field a team,” Martin said.
"The emphasis will definitely be on enjoying their footy which hopefully will help them develop their skills - it doesn't matter if they haven't played before.
"We've lost a few players from each grade over the last few seasons due to families moving town but hopefully we can get a few new players this year.”
Martin said the club's friendly environment was what sets them apart.
"We're trying to make it a more family-orientated club and that's what we've been working on in the past 2-3 years and having the parents inclusive,” he said.
"Our U8s to U11s have got a really good bunch of parents who are social and enjoy each others company.
"That's the thing we're trying to push - to get parents involved so they have a good time and the kids can all knock around together - that's the path we're trying to head down.”
Training for U10s-U12s takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-6pm at Albion Park.
