We always had a vege patch when I was growing up. We used to have one here too with tomatoes and rockmelons.

We grew Italian tomatoes in bunches and they came out really well, but Honey my dog chewed my rockmelon when it was a big, perfect size. I was devastated.

Do you spend time gardening as a family? The kids help out all the time. The girls even have Peppa Pig and Mini Mouse gardening gloves.

Boe is really good and helps with the weeding, clearing away the dead palm fronds.

How long have you lived here? Two years. When we first moved in the garden was near death.

We just watered and cleared away all the dead stuff and it has recovered.

What do you enjoy most about gardening? I love having a vegie patch. You get to eat your fruit and everything you can grow.

My daughter loves tomatoes and when we have cherry tomatoes she eats them off the plant. I have to tell her to go and wash them all the time.

Favourite plant? Bird of paradise. They are just beautiful when they flower. The flowers on mine have died in the cold though.

Do you find it hard to grow things in this soil? I find different parts of the town have different types of soil.

Even here, the soil in our front yard is very rocky and harder to grow in. But the soil in the backyard is really nice.
