U10 touch footy team wins comp in decider against Rocky
GLADSTONE'S under-10 touch footy team won the Red Rooster Touch Footy Carnival in Rockhampton on the weekend.
In a format where teams are ranked on where they finish on the ladder, the Gladstone side was pitted in the top two and played the division one decider against Rockhampton Buckaneers and won 6-4.
Victorious coach Luke Peachey said his team had a great year, finishing third in Hervey Bay earlier this year.
"Our standouts in a team effort throughout the carnival were Tama Hodgson, Jack Alexander and Dylon Long," Peachey said.
His daughter Lilly's under-14 team lost to Mackay in a dramatic final where scores were even at fulltime 2-2 and the overtime was on a drop-off format in which both sides reduced a player until the first score.
"The girls had a great year as well and they won the Hoggs Breath Cup earlier this year," Peachey said.
The event had 140 teams from under-10 through to under-17 and organiser Denise Edwards said that it was a huge success.
"A lot of the Gladstone teams did really well," Edwards said.
Gladstone U17 coach Kevin Cridland added that 13 teams from Gladstone participated.
