Dating night set to help tradies find love

TRADIE John West is looking for a lady. The 25-year-old roofer works 11 days straight on Curtis Island and is keen to get out and socialise.

"I've been single for nine months," he said. "I don't want a girlfriend unless she's the one."

Mr West and other bachelors in Gladstone will have the chance to get their romance on at The Reef Hotel's Tradie for A Lady event next Friday.

Tradie For a Lady includes speed dating, games, a blind date and an underwear fashion parade.

It's not the most common way of mixing with the opposite sex, but Mr West reckons it's good to try something new.

"I usually meet girls on social media or when I am out drinking on the weekend," he said.

"I haven't done speed dating before, but it's a good way to meet like-minded people."

Mr West said every lady needs a tradie, with their looks not the only attractive aspect about them.

"Tradies are good with their hands," he said.

And 22-year-old Gladstone local Spice McKenzie is keen to be a part of the action.

"It's going to bring people back to the nightlife in town," she said.

"People complain there isn't much to do here so it's a good way for people to have fun."

Ms McKenzie, who has been single for three months, believes mixing with people face-to-face can't do any harm.

"On social media and in text you can put an act on, but this is real," she said.

The barmaid admitted tradies can be 'really good or really bad.'

"They can be one extreme to the next, but they are normally genuine guys," she said.

There will be free cocktails, snacks, canapes and a blind dating game on the evening which kicks off at 6pm.

Dan England from Australian Idol will provide the music with the party going until 1am.
