Me and My Ride: Junior dragster
ALEXIS Barbeler could very well be the fastest teenager in Gladstone.
Zooming down Benaraby Raceway, Alexis is in a realm not many people get to experience.
A realm the 16-year-old has grown accustomed to over two years of racing her junior dragster quickly down the tarmac.
"Sometimes it feels slow and sometimes it feels fast," she laughed.
"My brother rides bikes and I was always there so I wanted to start."
Alexis has made a lot of progress in the two years she has been drag racing, not only on the track but in working on her dragster in the garage as well.
Nearly ready for another rebuild on the motor, Alexis helps dad Michael with all the work on the car, which has needed a bit of effort in the past.
"I always do it with dad. I am not allowed to do it myself," Alexis said.
"We recently put a new motor in it and I think we are going to have to rebuild it."
Alexis has had other problems with her dragster over the time as well, with cracked belt guards and oil reservoirs just a couple of the minor hiccups.
In just over a year's time, Alexis may be forced into another car too, when she moves out of the junior class.
But one thing is for sure - she won't be driving anything not matching the colour scheme she likes.
"Black and purple are my colours," Alexis said.
