Thailand resort voted top eco-boutique

THAILAND'S five-star organic resort, Thanyamundra, has been voted one of Asia's top three eco-boutiques by leading travel site

Thanyamundra placed third in agoda's prestigious new Top 10 Eco-Boutiques in Asia 2011, in recognition of the resort's commitment to sustainable farming and gourmet organic cuisine and also for its sheer breathtaking beauty.

According to "Thanyamundra inhabits the other-worldly terrain of Khao Sok … a two-hour drive from Phuket airport. Thanyamundra provides an accessible escape from urban life with butlers trained at some of Thailand's finest hotels, an English-speaking chef with an extensive repertoire and talented massage therapists on call.

At all times of the year, Thanyamundra welcomes its guests, limited to 20 at a time, to explore the 12 hectare (1,600 square metre) organic farm with Pierre Larigaldie, who oversees the crop fields.

Since Larigaldie began preparing the earth here almost five years ago, all plantings have been 100 per cent organic and chemical free. Rows of aromatic Thai and Italian basil, dill, coriander and chillies run parallel to white and purple eggplants, red snake beans, winged peas, bitter gourd and morning glory. Avocadoes, papaya, passion fruit, mango, banana, and more sprout besides verdant rice fields where three varieties of rice are grown.

According to Monsieur Larigaldie, Thanyamundra's produce is probably some of the most pure and natural food in Asia. "

The farm is fed by a beautiful mountain stream, and our pump is the first one to take water out for irrigation.

"We don't use any chemicals or fertilizer, apart from my own compost recipe. And we improve the quality of the soil by planting certain types of legumes, which naturally increase the nitrogen content," he said.

Today, Thanyamundra's organic farm is the only one of its kind in southern Thailand with an Agricultural Certificate of Thailand (ACT), part of the International Organic Accreditation Service.
