Test against the best for Gladstone juniors

AUSSIE RULES: The best young male and female BITS Saints and Gladstone Mudcrab players will showcase their skills at the 13-15 years State Australian Football Championships in Cairns.

Competition starts tomorrow with Muddies U13 players Tierney Burke, Kiera O'Connor and Molly Black and Saints junior Brooke Sheridan a part of the Capricorn team, which will take on Wide Bay at 11.20am.

Girls' coach Daniel Skipper said it was somewhat of an unknown what his team would produce.

"We tend to improve with each game and a lot of the girls haven't played a lot of footy," he said.

"We're coming up against teams who have been preparing for months and training weekly."

Skipper said Brooke was one of the more experienced team members and played last year in defence.

"She will play in midfield and up forward but played in defence last year because she has a great kick on her," he said.

BITS players Kaiden Jenkins, Jordan Jacobson, Sam Spencer-Galvin, Jonty Watkin, Adan Hull, Joey Airton, Bill Dwan and Max Green are in the U15 boys' Cap team.

Coach Darren Boase expects his charges to more than match other regional teams.

Their first test is against Darling Downs from midday tomorrow at Cazaly's Stadium.

"It's a good measure to where we are at in the games against other country teams," Boase said.

"It will be a good experience for our players and for them to see how hard some of the players put in from the bigger regions like the Sunny Coast."

Games continue on Friday and Saturday with pool finals on Sunday.
