Ten things to do in Gladstone this weekend

1. Clean Up Australia Day

THERE'S plenty to clean up across the region after Cyclone Marcia swept by last week, so Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday is timely.

Gladstone Regional Council has several nominated sites throughout the region including Gladstone Tondoon Botanic Gardens.

There are also registered clean up sites at Miriam Vale, Agnes Water, Seventeen Seventy, Rosedale, Deepwater, Boyne Island, Tannum Sands, Builyan, Ubobo, Calliope and Yarwun.

2. Calliope Historical Village Markets

THE Calliope Historical Village Markets are one of the largest in Queensland and are run on a monthly basis along the banks for the Calliope River.

Take the kids along on Sunday for a trip on the famous miniature train ride, or check out the wide range of homewares, fresh produce, plants and bric-a-brac for sale.

Whilst at the markets, you also can visit the village's historic buildings including Raglan Hall, Curtis House, Hazeldean Church, Clyde Hotel, Barmundoo Homestead and the Larson Cottage.

The markets, on Carrarra Rd, Calliope, are on from 8am to 1pm. Entry is $2.

3. Pirates of Penzance

PIRATES of Penzance will take the stage on Saturday at the Gladstone Entertainment and Convention Centre for a show suited to the whole family.

A cast of six will perform the evergreen Gilbert and Sullivan musical, smash-hit Broadway musical at 8pm.

It's set to contain Gilbert and Sullivan wit, melodrama, hilarious surprises, plenty of rollicking musical delights.

There will be lots of costume changes and plenty of hit songs.

Doors open at 7pm and tickets are $33 for adults and children are $15. Head to the GECC website for more information.

4. Charity trail ride

THE Ambrose Charity Trail ride will be held on a new block on Darts Creek Rd, Ambrose, on Saturday and Sunday.

The ride will raise funds for a local family that has a newborn suffering from kidney failure.

The Ambrose State School P&C will run a canteen and Ambrose Playgroup will run a bar on Saturday night.

Camping is available, but take your own water.

Registrations open at 11am on Saturday, with riding from noon on Saturday and 8am on Sunday.

5. Fundraising night for Boyne Valley family

A FUNDRAISING night for Tanya and Kev Smalley will be hosted by the Boyne Valley community on Saturday.

The family has been plagued with health and financial troubles.

The event will be held at Calliope Community Centre on Don Cameron Drive, Calliope, from 7.30pm.

6. Music night at Bororen

A ROCK'N'ROLL/country music night at the Bororen Hall on Saturday.

Come dressed up in a rock'n'roll theme.

The P&C will have a barbecue starting at 5.30pm, and from 7pm there will be a bar open and raffles.

7. Friends of RSPCA cent sale

THE Friends of RSPCA's first cent sale for 2015 will be held on Saturday with more than 400 prizes up for grabs during an entertaining afternoon.

The cent sale will be held at the Gladstone Senior Citizens Centre, with doors opening at 11am and the event kicking off at 1pm.

There will also be general raffles and a cake walk throughout the afternoon as well as afternoon tea served.

All proceeds from the event will go towards feeding, veterinary expenses and housing of the foster cats and dogs that are presently in the group's care.

8. Show and shine

A CAR show will be held in the Gladstone Valley car park from 5pm on Saturday.

There will be a mix of old school cars that attended the January show and shine.

There will be lots of hampers to give away and trophies.

Those wishing to participate can take their old school car, collect their tickets and enjoy chatting to like minded people. 

9. Benaraby Raceway drag racing

ROUND one of the CQDRA Championship will be held at Benaraby Raceway on Saturday.

Racing will include street cars, bikes and junior dragsters.

Gates open at 10am, with qualifying from 12.30-4.30pm, and racing from 5-10pm.

Spectator admission is $20 adults, $15 members and $15 children 13-16 years.

10. Surf life saving championships

TANNUM Sands will host the Wide Bay Capricorn Branch Titles this weekend with more than 350 people expected to attend.

Eight surf clubs will battle it out to be the Surf Life Saving Champions of central Queensland. 

Fundraising will take place for Yeppoon and Emu Park surf life saving clubs, which sustained damage to their clubhouses during Cyclone Marcia.

The action starts at 8am on Saturday and Sunday.

And one more...

THERE'S plenty of surf action at Agnes Water this weekend with the Reef 2 Beach Longboad Classic.

More than 110 riders are expected to compete in the 17th annual classic.

On top of the prizes for winners of events, there is also the chance for surfers to score big time in raffles all weekend. 

The surfing action begins at 7am on Saturday, with the finals from 7am on Sunday.
