BMW M3 and M4 Competition Package specials
BMW has announced a new Competition Package for its performance M3 and M4 offerings, bringing power hikes, handling upgrades and exclusive equipment.
The venerable M cars - available in M3 Sedan, M4 Coupe and M4 Convertible variants - will all be available as Competition specials in the first half of this year, with BMW Group Australia hopeful we'll receive them down under.
Competition cars see a power boost of 14kW to offer 331kW from the 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinders, and when mated to the optional 7-speed M double clutch transmission, the 0-100kmh sprint is cracked in four seconds flat for the M3 and M4 Coupe. That shaves 0.1-seconds off non Competition Package variants. The same improvement is seen with the M4 Convertible; its 0-100kmh time down 0.1-seconds to 4.3-seconds. Manual variants also have 0.1-seconds shaved off their sprint times.
The M team has also got busy optimising the chassis. Competition Package cars feature Adaptive M Suspension which BMW says has been extensively tuned to enhance performance and handling, featuring new springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, along with reconfigured driving modes (Comfort, Sport and Sport+).
The rear differential and stability control have also received tweaks to suit, while exclusive forged and machine-polished multi-spoke 20-inch M alloy wheels arrive on Competition cars.
The hard top M3 and M4s receive special lightweight M sports seats and woven M stripes for the seat belts, while exterior highlights include black chrome tailpipes, BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim for the windows, recesses, mirrors, kidney grille, side gills and model badge on the tail.
Enthusiasts of BMW's M cars - of which there are plenty - go soft for special models (something certainly reflected in such cars' used prices on our market), so fans will be hopeful the Competition Package M cars will be made available here.
Lenore Fletcher of BMW Group Australia suggested they're working hard to ensure the package is offered to Australian customers.
"We certainly want to have the Competition Package for Australian cars, but we don't have final confirmation as yet. But given Australians' love affair with performance vehicles it would be a fantastic addition to the M range."
As such, no premium for the Competition Package has been revealed on top of the M3 Sedan ($139,900), M4 Coupe ($149,900) or M4 Convertible ($161,900) list prices.
