State High recreates Dr Seuss classics in musical
THE best of the Dr Seuss stories and tales have been collated to create the Gladstone State High School's first musical in four years.
Seussical the Musical will hit the GECC stage on Friday July 31 and Saturday August 1.
The cast is made up of students from years 7 to 12.
Jordan Kocks is taking on the role of Jojo, who is stuck in Whoville with a large imagination and being led astray by The Cat in the Hat.
The show is based on the Horton Hears A Who book, but features a number of other Dr Seuss stories.
Horton goes on a journey to save Jojo and Whoville whilst trying to escape the disbelievers in the jungle.
Director, Arts Head of Department, Peta Pitt said she was excited to present this show after Seuss was also a part of her childhood.
"Growing up listening to Seuss stories on cassette tape was a way to ignite many a child's imagination in the 70's."
"Watching the performance develop from page to stage is a thrill and one I have the privilege to share with a number of other state high staff members who also have memorable accounts and varied experiences of Dr Seuss."
Cristie Lolo, pictured, has been working on the bringing the musical to life on the stage.
It is her first time designing and building set pieces and backdrops for a musical and while the task has been challenging, she has enjoyed it.
"It has allowed me to tap into my creativity as an artist."
"Some students who have been working on wearable art, were thrilled that their class work would be featured in the musical."
"It is really rewarding for them to see their skills appreciated." Ms Lolo stated.
Tickets to the show are $20 for adults and $15 for students and concession holders, and can be purchased at the Box Office at the Entertainment Centre or online here.
