Smith to answer SOS from Capras

RUGBY LEAGUE: Gladstone Valleys junior Sam Smith is set to answer a defensive SOS call from Capras coach Kim Williams ahead of a tough road trip to the Sunshine Coast this weekend.

The Capras were defensively poor during their Rivalry Round clash against Mackay Cutters last Saturday, leaking eight tries in a 38-22 loss at Browne Park.

With the Capras languishing in 11th spot on the Intrust Super Cup ladder after only two wins from six games, Williams admitted there needed to be a selection shake-up.

"Our edges need changing more than anything,” he said.

"We leaked points on the edges on both sides of the field last weekend so it's just trying to get that combination which works best.

"We've tried a couple of different combinations on each edge and we've tweaked that again this week.”

Those tweaks allow Smith to sneak back into Williams' line-up after a powerful two-try performance for Valleys in their 62-14 thrashing of Brothers in the Rockhampton extended competition.

Sam Smith is relishing the opportunity to take on the Redcliffe Dolphins, with or without Benji Marshall.

"Sam gets the nod because he has experience at (ISC) level and we have quality opposition this week,” Williams said.

"Justin Tavae will push out to the wing and Sam comes back into the centres.

"Sam was quite good defensively in the three games (rounds 1-3) he had with us at the beginning of the year, so I'm looking for more of the same from him.

"Hopefully he can bring a bit more defensive starch to that edge.”

The Falcons match is the first of three away games for the Capras.

Capras co-captain Guy Williams will play his 200th Queensland Cup match.

Meanwhile, Capras prop Matt Groat has pleaded guilty to a Grade 1 striking charge and will miss one week.
