Small regional school has smashed big counterparts
RUGBY LEAGUE: Chanel College is the NRL Schoolboy Trophy Central Queensland / North Queensland Quad Series Final winner after a sensational 32-6 win over Trinity Bay in Townsville.
The win guarantees a spot in the State Final, which will be played in Brisbane on August 28 and to be broadcast on FOX.
The young men from Chanel were never headed but led narrowly 10-6 at half-time.
Chanel College coach Chris Andersen praised all of his playing group and did not want to single anyone out because it was a whole-hearted team effort.
"Mate, just very proud of the young men that have gone away and really proud of the school that gave them the opportunity," he said.
"It was a really excellent result and looking forward to now play in the state championship."
Tallis Stanhope got the ball rolling with a corner try and when Lyncoln Rebel slotted a conversion towards the end, it was party time for the Chanel players, coaches and parents who made the trip up north.
"It was key to start well and Trinity Bay knew they were in for a tough game of football right from the start," Andersen said.
"We got a few lucky bounces and things like that but you sort of make your own luck."
Chanel entered the decider full of confidence firstly on the back of its Confraternity Cup win last month.
And its 52-4 romp in the semi-final against Good Shepherd Catholic College on Thursday gave the young men from Chanel the giant-killing mindset, which they executed to perfection yesterday afternoon.
