Singing sisters all set for harbour festival talent quest
THE bond between siblings is special, especially when music is in the equation.
Sisters Grace and Avril Hocking love music and will enter the 2014 Gladstone Harbour Festival Junior Talent Quest as a duo for the first time.
Grace, 15, and Avril, 13, haven't picked a song or outfit for the talent quest yet but they aren't nervous.
Grace, a cello, guitar and violin player, also is a keen singer. Avril also likes to sing.
Both starred in the combined schools Peter Pan musical and also regularly compete in the Gladstone City eisteddfods.
"Our whole family is really musical, we've sung forever," Grace says.
"We are thinking of doing Ring of Fire or Love, by Lennon and Macey (for the festival). They are two American sisters on YouTube who sing similar to us.
"They are about our age and we take ideas from them."
Avril will be singing the harmony at the Talent Quest, while Grace will play the guitar.
The girls reckon they will be up against tough competition but are just looking to have fun.
"We are really excited to sing in front of a crowd and to get some constructive criticism from the judges," Grace says.
Avril's aspirations involve a career in health and fitness, and she also enjoys gymnastics.
"I am a gymnastics coach now, too. It's my first job," Avril says.
On the other hand, Grace wants to apply for Griffith University in Brisbane next year and study classical voice (opera).
Both girls are home schooled and have two elder siblings who have moved out.
"Avril and I are pretty close now. We are the only ones at home," Grace says.
The talent quest will be held from 6.30pm on Tuesday at the Gladstone Marina main stage.
Entries close on Friday. You can find an entry form here.
