Setback for Tannum Sands surf boat crew

SURF LIFE BOATS: Tony Davis's Tannun Sands' team of Nick Mckeiber, Kurt Sherwood and debutantes Nicholas Pintus and Dane Richards did not compete at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships surf life boat competition.

The waters were deemed too unsafe at North Kirra Beach on the Gold Coast because of the impact of ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie.

"It was cancelled by the State Government at about 7.30pm on Friday which was disappointing as the inspection could have been done on Saturday morning because the water was perfect,” Davis said.

Davis said his opinion was shared among some 200 rowers keen to get stuck in.

"So we did our own event and had our own 'Australian Title' or training day and there were eight divisions,” Davis said.

"We finished fifth in our unsanctioned event.” Davis is encouraging more young- sters, especially girls in the 16-17 year age-group, to join.

"The boys are keen and their enthusiasm will rub off on the new ones, both boys and girls,” Davis said.
