Seafood market owner wins award for industry promotion

THE owner of the Gladstone Seafood Market, who has refused to sell seafood from Gladstone Harbour because of concerns over fish health, has won a State Government award for industry promotion.

Simon Whittingham has refused to sell product from Gladstone Harbour since September 2011 despite the lifting of a State Government ban.

The Queensland Seafood Award, presented by Fisheries Queensland director-general Scott Spencer, was in recognition of Mr Whittingham's "tireless efforts in showcasing and advertising Queensland seafood whilst experiencing great adversities with regard to unhealthy local seafood being caught in Gladstone Harbour".

Mr Whittingham told News Ltd his offer to work on a new board to promote the harbour had not been accepted.

"To perform well at sales of any product you must believe what you are selling is the best, but we have had many reasons to doubt the quality of the product that is being harvested from within the fish ban zone," he said.
