Burgess backs away from boozy promise

SAM Burgess has hosed down speculation he might quit the NRL and return to the Super League in the UK, saying he and Wigan coach Shaun Wane shared some beers before "shaking hands on a few promises" he doesn't intend to act upon.

The star Rabbitohs forward was speaking ahead of South Sydney's clash against Wigan tomorrow night at ANZ Stadium.

"He's made a few headlines with that, I think, Waney," Burgess told the Yorkshire Post.

"Nah, I'm happy where I am at the minute.

"He came down and gave me a few beers, he tried feeding me a few and then we were shaking hands on a few promises.

Burgess denied any talk of a move to Super League after Wane last week said he'd tried to lure the dual-international back to the UK.

"He made me a few promises that if he ever comes (to Super League) there's a chance we might get together," Wane said at the time.

"You never say never. I'd love to coach him, he's done a great job in the NRL."

Burgess returned to the NRL in 2016 after a brief stint in UK rugby with Bath.

He lives in Sydney with wife Phoebe and daughter Poppy - both Australian.

"I have a daughter now, my wife is Australian so it does change a little bit because my daughter is probably going to grow up in Australia," he told the Daily Telegraph.
