Saints women's rugged victory over determined Muddies
AFLW: BITS Saints women are back in the winner's circle after kicking off a strong win over Gladstone Muddies on the weekend.
Saints recently suffered back-to-back losses and Muddies had their tails up with a victory over Yeppoon last week.
Muddies came out strong, kicking a goal in the early minutes of the game but Saints showed their professional approach and started to take control away from Muddies.
Saints forward Rebecca Fitton had a stand-out game, kicking five goals including a diving mark to inspire the team.
"I thought to myself, I gotta do it and take the catch,” Fitton said. "I wanted to motivate and lift our players to keep going with the game.”
At half time Saints coach Ben Fletcher spoke to his team about keeping up the pressure and maintaining the work rate.
"It's important to convert goals, use the space and not look just ahead,” he said.
"Keep the running up, the intensity and keep that back- line talk up.”
Mirrin Rashleigh maintained a strong attacking presence for Saints throughout.
The scoreboard for Saints slowed in the third quarter due to rigorous defence from Muddie's players Jada Hart and Hayley Kirkwood.
Defender Abby Bowtell worked hard in defence against the Muddies' attack to deny them any chance to score.
Saints led at every quarter to run out winners 8.6.(54) over Muddies 1.0.(6).
