Saints and Panthers hold on for epic draw

AUSSIE RULES: BITS Saints and Rockhampton Panthers could not be separated at the end of full-time at scenic Rockhampton Cricket Ground.

The blockbuster third round of AFL Capricornia produced its first draw of the season after an inaccurate Saints scored the final two points of the game to level scores 8.13 (61) to Panthers' 9.7 (61).

Recruit Sam Pierpoint snared three goals for the BITS side while Sam Schofield played his best game for his new club in midfield. BITS missed the services of captain Stephen Pugh, playing-coach Jake Mostert and Jacob Mills (all wedding)

"I think we just ran out of legs in the end, but at half-time we were up and about," BITS' stand-in coach Andrew McMahon said. "Panthers shuffled their midfield around after half-time, but we kicked poorly and kicked to the pockets instead of top of the square.

"Still, two points is better than none and we lick our wounds and move on."

BITS Saints big man Brendan Clarke was superb again with his attack on the ball and body in the centre square before he dislocated his shoulder late in the game while defender Trent Millar continued from last week's effort and former Glasdstone Mudcrabs midfielder Thaiday Reuben showed glimpses of class.

The visitors looked the better team early and had an 18-point lead at quarter-time before Panthers mounted its come-back with four successive goals which turned an 17-point deficit into a 50-44 lead.

This led to a titanic struggle in the final quarter, during which inaccuracy plagued both teams

Panthers' Calvin Hockley booted three goals that included a brace in the third term and team-mate D'Andre Waia kicked two and the better players were impressive trio of half-backs Matthew Ryan and Andrew Kapernick and midfielder Michael Kreun.

This weekend is the bye and BITS take on Glenmore at BITS the following Saturday.
