Irishman makes fair dinkum mates working on Curtis
FOR Irishman Ryan Heaney, six weeks in Australia changed his life forever.
Arriving in Gladstone in January last year, he now works as the leading hand on the APLNG site for Bechtel Logistics and is proud of his new circle of friends.
"I've met so many fair dinkum Aussie mates," Mr Heaney said.
"I fell in love with a stunning 'sheila' Kait and gained a new family in the Smiths."
One of Australia's newest permanent residents, Mr Heaney is looking forward to not worrying about his visa.
"It's such a relief to now be a resident," he said.
"Kait's mum was sweating a little with the thought of a shotgun wedding," he said.
Although Ireland and his family are never far from his mind, Mr Heaney is now working towards becoming a local.
"Some people tell me it takes 20 years to become a local," he said.
"But I think I'm giving it a good go."
