Rural residents urged to prepare for high fire season

RESIDENTS are being urged to prepare themselves and their property for the upcoming fire season.

Banana Shire Council Mayor and chairman of the Local Disaster Management Group Mayor Ron Carige said the high fire risk for the shire had been discussed at a recent meeting of the group.

He said the high fuel loads throughout the region indicated the need for people to be aware of the risk and make sure they were adequately prepared.

The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service are predicting a high fire season and preparations need to be taken seriously, he said.

With the season staying dry, hot weather predicted early, and the chance of major fires being a real risk, the council encouraged landholders to undertake hazard reduction burns on their property.

They need to contact their local fire station or fire warden for assistance or advice on requirements to obtain a permit to light fires.
