Roosters finish runners-up at Tassell Trophy Challenge
AFTER 17 hours on a bus, it would have been a reasonable for the Calliope Roosters under 14 side to play poorly.
Instead, the 17 strong squad jumped off the bus in a spritely manner and went to work on their opposition.
The team played the first day of the Tassell Trophy Challenge in Cairns in very impressive form, near perfectly actually, not allowing a point while scoring 56 points in three matches.
Although giving up one match early on the second day, the Roosters needed only a win to progress to the grand final of the competition for the very first time.
The team did it in impressive style, notching another match without conceding, this time by 34 points.
Facing Emu Park from Rockhampton, who were also making a first appearance in the final match, the Roosters headed into half time even at 6-6.
The team then ran out of steam and finished runner-up, but all of the boys and coach Todd Hansen were happy to progress further than expected.
It is the first time that a North Queensland side has not been in the final of the Tassell Trophy Challenge, and Calliope also competed against teams from New South Wales, who made up the 12-strong contingent in two pools.
