Rooster over the moon at Queensland U15s selection

RUGBY LEAGUE: MOVE over State of Origin, the spotlight will be on Tannum Sands's Declan Mallia during the under-15s Queensland vs New South Wales match next month.

The student was one of the nine Capricornia rugby league team members who made the state side.

Between June 21 and 26 he will travel to New South Wales to take on the traditional foe.

The 14-year-old played rugby union until he was eight then started playing for the Tannum Sands Seagulls.

Mallia now plays for the Calliope Roosters as a second rower.

"I enjoy playing with the team most and the satisfaction you get out of it after you play a game."

He trains up to four days a week.

This was the first year he had tried out for the Queensland side.

"I tried my best to stand out in the game and I thought the way I played was more dominant than my opposite number."

The team was undefeated until the grand final match where they played against the south coast.

Mallia said he was speechless when he found out he was playing for his state.

"I'm absolutely over the moon.

"I'm just really keen to play," he said.
