Cr Kahn Goodluck will break up a day of watching the numbers slowly roll in by collecting some of his campaign signs from around the district.

With only about 20 percent of the preliminary count complete, he said it was far too early to tell who's in and who's out.

Cr Goodluck waited weeks for his position on Council to be confirmed in 2016, and said early trends were a good sign.

He's currently sitting second out of the field of 21 candidates on 4828 votes.

Deputy mayor Chris Trevor is 55 votes in front on 4883.

Updated figures are expected from ECQ this afternoon.

Messages of congratulations are flooding in for Cr Burnett via social media now.

A post on the Mayor Matt Burnett Facebook page showing the tally for the preliminary count has attracted more than 30 comments in just under an hour.

Based on the praise, it's little wonder his percentage of the preliminary vote is currently sitting at almost 74 per cent.

Nothing official from Cr Burnett or Michael Fearns yet.

EARLIER: 9:45am

A clearer picture of who will sit on the Gladstone Regional Council is starting to emerge with more than 20 per cent of the preliminary count finished.

EARLIER: 9:30am

Incumbent mayor Matt Burnett has maintained a considerable lead over challenger Michael Fearns after more concrete numbers from the electoral commission overnight.

With just over 73 per cent of the preliminary count completed, Cr Burnett has 21420 (73.71%) votes to Mr Fearns 7638 (26.29%).

The ECQ blamed slow results overnight on technical issues, and the official count is expected to be on schedule today.

"ECQ experienced a data feed issue from polling booths to its website, which delayed the publication of the results," a spokesperson said.

"ECQ is working through the technical issues to ensure the results from the official count are published as scheduled from Sunday."

The numbers for council candidates from the initial count are also starting to filter through.

More to come.
