$1 million to be spent on new 1770 marina

SEVENTEEN Seventy will have a new marina before the end of the year.

The Mergard family will spend $1 million replacing the old marina that was built by their late father Des.

Des Mergard built the facility 30 years ago using a dredger he transported from Mundubbera.

The new marina will have room for 20 boats and will include a new fuelling and water station as well as a travel lift to haul larger boats out of the water.

Mark Mergard said the expansion had been on the cards since 2008 but it wasn't until this year, when tourist numbers rose by 10%, that confidence in the boating community had returned.

"That's why we decided to make this investment now," Mr Mergard said.

"The old one was a bit run down and this will ultimately increase our income.

"This is the closet point in the whole of Queensland in the outer Great Barrier Reef and we're expecting tourist numbers to keep increasing."

The works are expected to take two months to complete.
