Residents invited to hear latest on cruise ship plans

GLADSTONE region residents are invited to a community meeting later this month to receive updated information on the arrival of P&O cruises in Gladstone.

The Gladstone Region Cruise Liner Working Group will host the meeting on September 30 at the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre from 9.30am.

Discussions will highlight the regional value of P&O cruise services' arrival, and provide information on how residents and businesses can benefit.

Regional Strategy portfolio spokesman Matt Burnett said the P&O visits represented a major boost for the region's tourism growth.

"Gladstone will soon become a port of call for major cruise ships, providing a welcome financial injection for the local economy," Cr Burnett said.

"As the gateway to the southern Great Barrier Reef, it is highly appropriate that Gladstone has been recognised as one of a handful of regional ports considered as a regular cruise destination.

"The Gladstone region has plenty on offer for residents and visitors and these visits provide the opportunity to share and promote our local attractions with thousands of travellers."

P&O Cruises has scheduled four calls to Gladstone between March and August next year, with cruise patrons having about an eight hour stop-over.

Expressions of interest are also being sought from local companies interested in offering locally-based tours to P&O Cruise patrons.

Interested companies are encouraged to phone Jodi Pilborough on 5562 2039.
