Reef not in danger: UNESCO recommendation
IN a decision heartily embraced by the Federal and State Environment ministers, UNESCO has recommended that it will not list the Great Barrier Reef as "in danger".
The draft decision is expected to be formally finalised next month at Bonn in Germany at a meeting to be attended by Queensland Environment Minister Steven Miles.
At a press conference this morning in Brisbane, Dr Miles and Federal Environment minister Greg Hunt expressed their delight at the UNESCO recommendation.
Mr Hunt said he was absolutely delighted describing it as "great news for the Reef". "The world has recognised the progress being made in Australia," he said.
Mr Hunt said he recognised the efforts made by vocal local groups, although he said some had not been constructive.
All references to "in danger" have been dropped in the draft report and Queensland and Australia's efforts were praised.
