Pound changes hours: no surrender of pets on weekends

THE Gladstone Regional Council pound at Brendonna Boarding Kennels and Cattery in Burua will operate with different opening hours after Friday.

The pound will open for surrender and release of impounded animals from Monday to Friday between 9am to 10.30am and 3pm to 4.30pm.

There will be no service available to the public over the weekends for release or surrender of animals.

The council's environment portfolio spokesperson Councillor Col Chapman said residents are strongly encouraged to note these hours.

"Members of the public wishing to surrender an animal for impoundment will be required to follow directional signage on the property to present the animal to an onsite attendant," Cr Chapman said.

Cr Chapman said payment of impounding fees was still required prior to collection of an impounded animal.

Release fees may be paid at any council office during normal business hours.

The receipt must be presented at the Brendonna Boarding Kennels and Cattery prior to release of the animal.

Cr Chapman said responsible pet ownership was crucial for the region with the council earlier this month approving a contract for the refurbishment and expansion of the former Gladstone Pound at Callemondah.

"The estimated $1.43 million pound refurbishment project will meet the future growth forecasts for animal control in the region and will be operated by Council," he said.

"The current arrangements with the private operators will conclude with the opening of the new facility at Callemondah."
