PHOTOS: Grand finals are on tonight in Oztag
OZTAG: The sport of Oztag is gaining momentum and there was no better way than to showcase it on Sunday.
Xtreme Taggers won a thriller 7-6.
There's more great Oztag action tonight with the senior A and B-grade semi-finals and grand finals at the Gladstone Brothers Junior Rugby League Fields.
The 6pm A-grade semi-finals are between Here for The Beer and Ezisource on field two and Mantis All Stars and ASN on field one.
The B-grade semi's are between Port City meats and SJ Photography on field two and Training for Warriors against Gladstone Physio and Fitness on field one.
These games are at 6.50pm with the grand finals at 7.40pm followed by presentations.
Oztag representative and venue manager Paul Chaplin said tonight would finish what had been an extremely successful first season.
Oztag teams consist of eight players on the field who each place two tags on their shorts.
It is a limited contact sport that has no tackling
"The aim is to grab the tag' from the side of your opponent's shorts to stop them from scoring a try," Chaplin said.
"There are five sets before a fresh five sets is given to the other team.
"Players have the option to kick the ball as well and each try is worth a point although two points per try are given to females in both junior and senior levels."
To indicate how popular the sport is in Gladstone, Chaplin drew a comparison with a bigger region.
"In Toowoomba which is such a big area after four years, there's 12 teams and the aim was 11," he said.
Xtreme Taggers coach Jess Maxwell, whose daughter Jamie scored the winning try, said she was not sure which team had won after the referees had scores locked away at 7-7.
After some deliberation and re-calculation, the Xtreme team were announced as winners.
"We kept our own scores and we knew that we won it," Maxwell said.
"It was a close game and thanks to the Star Stealers for giving us some great competition and we've had a great season against them."
There's a short turnaround with the 2020 senior season to start on January 29.
Registrations are now open and can be done online on the Oztag Gladstone website.
