Peter Slipper to face court over alleged Cabcharge misuse

FORMER federal parliamentary speaker Peter Slipper is expected to face a Canberra court today on charges he allegedly misused his Cabcharge allowances in 2010.

Police allege the former Sunshine Coast MP used the allowance to visit Canberra wineries on three occasions and then filled in dockets to hide the fact he had not been on parliamentary business.

A police statement of facts reveals on the first occasion in January 2010, Slipper visited up to six wineries including the prestigious Poachers Pantry and Clonakilla.

The total bill for the three trips is believed to be just over $900.

The charges were initially laid early last year, but there has been a long delay in bringing the case to a hearing, partly because of two legal challenges from Slipper.

The latest challenge, based on mental health concerns, was thrown out in June.
