Pacific Rim 2 to film in Queensland

QUEENSLAND has attracted another big blockbuster set to film on our shores next year.

Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, the sequel to director Guillermo del Toro's 2013 sci-fi film Pacific Rim, will employ 270 Queensland crew according to State Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

"I met with Legendary Pictures in Los Angeles last year and it is because of this relationship and their recent positive experience filming Kong: Skull Island that they are bringing more business to Queensland," the Premier said.

"This repeat business is testament to Queensland's creative and technical capability and provides jobs and new money into the Queensland economy."

The original film, which starred Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba, followed mankind's war against alien creatures which emerged from the sea using large robots called Jaegers operated by specially trained pilots.

Today's announcement follows back-to-back major blockbusters that have shot in the Sunshine State including Thor: Ragnarok, Jungle with Daniel Radcliffe, Kong: Skull Island, The Shallows, Nest, Pirates of the Caribbean and San Andreas.

"My Government has invested an extra $30 million over four years into Screen Queensland.  These funds have been dedicated to attracting large-scale film and high-end television productions to Queensland to drive jobs, tourism and new spend into our economy," the Premier said.

"Last financial year was Queensland's best year in terms of attracting production expenditure since 2002-03 - a record year - of $233 million."

Written and directed by Steven S DeKnight (Marvel's Daredevil), Pacific Rim 2 will star John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Scott Eastwood, Tian Jing, Charlie Day and Cailee Spaeney, with del Toro serving as writer and producer.

Pacific Rim 2 is slated for release in February 2018.
