Pace attack to lead the way as NQ Champs begin in Rocky

MACKAY Whitsundays will lean on a quality bowling contingent to lead the way when they hit the road to Rockhampton for the opening round of the North Queensland Championships this weekend.

Norths' dual pace threat of Lane and Mason Kholer will join Brothers newcomer Mitch Wadsworth to form a deadly seam bowling triumvirate the envy of cricket rivals.

Magpies' Isaac Borg will lead the spinning corps as skipper Sam Vassallo's side aims to avenge its middling showing at the championships in years past.

"We probably haven't performed as well at the country championships as we would have liked. We have the guys to do it, we just haven't performed the past two or three years," Vassallo said.

The second-year skipper and opening bat was thrown a curveball this week with Walkerston teammate Jakob Frerichs dropping out of the side for the trip to Rockhampton.

The "jack of all trades" will leave a big hole at the top of the order but one Vassallo believes can be capably filled.

"He would have probably been opening the batting with me," Vassallo said.

"The amount of runs he's scored this season (makes him) a massive out for us. His will be a hard spot to fill for sure.

"Whoever comes in will want to go down there and make a name for themselves. They'll be pretty keen to get in and do a good job for us, which I'm sure they will."

The skipper is also "pretty keen" to cash in with the bat, after he admittedly failed to fire over the Bulls Masters weekend earlier this month.

"I'm not going down there to not score runs, that's for sure," he said.

"I missed out in Bundy … so I'm pretty keen to get some scores beside my name, that's for sure."

A win in Rockhampton would be the perfect start to Mackay Whitsundays' campaign, ahead of a home double-header at Harrup Park against Townsville and Cairns in a fortnight's time.
