Our Jacquie wins Women in League NRL honour
RUGBY LEAGUE: As women's rugby league in Gladstone continues to grow, one of the driving forces behind the scene has had her achievements recognised at the highest level.
Gladstone and District Rugby League treasurer Jacqueline Jones recently won the Women in League Achievement Award at the 2017 NRL Community Awards.
Nominees gathered with family and friends in Sydney for the 11th edition of the awards, that acknowledge some of the game's many unassuming heroes and their tireless community support.
Jones had many hurdles to jump in order to win the award, going through three stages of the nomination process before being chosen.
The GDRL nominated Jones and secretary Wendy Deacon for awards at the Queensland Rugby League Central Division level with Jones progressing.
She then won the Queensland leg which went to the NRL with much of that document alluding to her activity in women's rugby league in Gladstone.
GDRL president Richard Duff said the organisation had come a long way since Jones had been involved.
"She's been with us for over 10 years working with juniors and seniors and been treasurer of both over that time,” Duff said.
"She's a life member of the juniors and has taken that organisation from a struggling entity to now where we've got lights on the field and a grandstand.
"She has a passion for women's rugby league and had been a driver behind women's rugby league in Gladstone last year.
"She does all the draws for juniors and seniors and organises all our volunteers while collaborating with Wendy.
"The fields have come a long way since the girls have been here.”
Jones also attended the NRL grand final as a guest of the QRL.
Jones was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.
