No more break on rates for church struggling in downturn

A REQUEST to reduce commercial rates on property owned by the Anglican Church, Gladstone has been rejected.

In July Father Daniel Paulraj wrote to Gladstone Regional Council asking for concessions on their property at Tank St which houses the "This n That Shop" and other tenancies.

In the letter Father Daniel wrote having tenants in previous years had made paying the rates possible.

However, the downturn in Gladstone's economy has left some shops vacant for more than six months.

The request was refused this week at the council meeting on the basis three other properties owned by the church were already exempt under local government legislation.
