QAL manager no amateur when it comes to keeping fit
HE may be 57-years-old but this Gladstone resident of 25 years is built for extreme fitness.
Queensland Alumina Limited general manager Mike Dunstan is no amateur when it comes to triathlons, and his weekend participation in the Boyne Smelters Tannum Triathlon is just one case in point.
Mr Dunstan has spent many years as a marathon runner and more recently a top triathlete.
"I'm pretty competitive - I like to keep myself fit," he said. "I've always been a really strong runner and bike rider."
His best results can be summed up to placing third in his division in 2003 in the Australian championships, finishing 13th in the Mexico world titles and in 2011 finishing 19th in the Las Vegas world championships.
"I exceeded my expectations," he said.
But his efforts are not without hard work.
Mr Dunstan said he was up at 4am before work, training almost 20 hours a week with 12km swimming, 350km bike riding and about 45km running.
Next year he is training to qualify for the world championships in Canada.
"It's fantastic," he said, summing up the sport.
