Netball rivals face off in grand final ... again

NETBALL: While it's a different year - it's a case of some things remaining the same.

Valleys Stars and Yaralla Falcons meet again in the Gladstone Netball Association Senior 1 grand final tonight.

Falcons will attempt to win their third consecutive premiership after an epic 30-25 triumph over Stars last year.

Tonight's showdown is sure to be another classic and the only thing uncertain is the outcome.

Falcons' captain Melanie Dyball said despite the absence of goal shooter Sheena Gilmour, they have the depth to successfully defend the title.

"We've still got our four juniors that played with us last year who will step up from junior grand finals and they are Abbi Cooper, Keeley Dillon, Samarah Belton and Eden Johnson," Dyball said.

"Sue Tulloch will lead in the shooting end and she'll be hard to contain with her accuracy and speed and Amy Harte will join in with Sue in the attacking end."

The grand final will have a definite family flavour with Abbi Cooper and her mum Nat to line up in the defensive third for the Falcons.

The family ties continue in the Belton household but loyalties will be divided with Samarah to play for the Falcons while sister Yasmin will line up for the Stars.

Tracey Calis and her daughter Zoe will also play for Stars on what shapes as a busy day for the duo who will also play for the Meteors in the Gladstone Hockey League decider.

"Zoe and I will be running from hockey to netball," Calis said, with the hockey final to finish at 6.10pm.

"It's not as if I can leave (straight away) because I'm a goalie."

The rush between games aside, the possibility to win both the netball and hockey grand finals is a massive spur for mother and daughter.

"It will be a good weekend if we do," Calis said.

The experienced goal shooter tipped juniors Jaime and Kiara Holzberger and Meg Collins to play key roles for the Stars.
