Mural adds new life to kindergarten
KIN KORA Community Kindergarten has unveiled its new friendship garden and jungle-themed mural at a friends and family day.
C&K Kin Kora Community Kindergarten co-director Naomi Harris said the project had been seven months in the making.
She said it had only been made possible by community help and a $5000 Brighter Futures grant from Arrow Energy.
"It's been a real community effort, the kids and parents all chipped in from the initial clean up to the final touches," Ms Harris said.
Among the 30 adults and children that gathered to celebrate the garden on Friday, special guest attendee Gladstone MP Liz Cunningham was especially proud of the social work.
The new area includes a 3m blackboard, native plant and grasses, a rest zone, herb and fruit and vegetable section and of course the jungle feature wall.
Toolooa State High School's year 11 and 12 art students painted the mural during the school holidays.
Ms Harris said it had made a big improvement from the grey walls and dead grass that was there previously.
The new area is aimed at promoting social skills necessary for prep, she said.
"Every week we will change the activities in the space to promote different social aspects like sharing or manners," Ms Harris said.
"We're planning on continuing the mural further in the future to include a musical section."
