Mr Walter is a show winner

1930: A flower show under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church took place today. Mr W Walters won first prize for the best garden, and Mr NL Worthington obtained second prize.

A large number of residents of Calliope and district assembled to bid farewell to Mr RG Joyner and family, who will shortly be leaving for Cairns.

1971: Latest addition to the Observer's literary staff is Mr Kevin Pearce, well-known rugby league administrator, commentator and enthusiast of a "thousand" sports. Kevin, 24, takes over as Sports Editor from an equally well-known figure on the Gladstone racing scene, Mr John Curtis, who left this week for a position on a Sydney newspaper. Kev was raised in the Boyne Valley and educated at Gladstone State High School. In his spare time, Kev has served the Gladstone Rugby League as vice-president, senior committee member, selector-manager of the Gladstone Under 19 teams, public relations officer, member of the judiciary and referees boards.

Belle of the Ball at Calliope on Saturday night was Lorelle Sawdy, 18. She chose a white crystal nylon frock for the ball. Miniature Belle was Leanne Rideout, 7.
