BARRY Gulliford thinks the Gladstone region has more to offer than just the Great Barrier Reef.
Like the Miriam Vale Rodeo next month, for example.
The rodeo committee member said the annual event was a big tourism drawcard, particularly for backpackers wanting to get a more "outback bush experience".
"With woodchopping and chainsaw competitions, it's really quite interesting," he said.
"Many people come for the rodeo and stay a week."
The 67-year-old also said Many Peaks and the Boyne Valley offered a different experience for travellers.
"It's beautiful up there. It has a nice old style about it," he said.
The annual Fly In and Heritage Show at Raglan's Old Station is set to attract up to 10,000 visitors this weekend.
But Mr Gulliford said our region would not reach its tourism potential until the Bruce Hwy was upgraded.
