Minister requests submissions on failure of bund wall
ENVIRONMENT Minister Greg Hunt will welcome submissions from individuals and organisations into the Gladstone Ports Corporation's bund wall failure, as part of an independent review being conducted by the Federal Government.
Submissions are open until February 28 and will be taken into consideration as part of the Terms of Reference.
The independent review panel comprising Dr Andrew Johnson, Ms Anthea Tinney and Dr Ian Cresswell have four main considerations under their Terms of Reference:
- To examine information about the design, construction and functioning of the outer bund wall of the Western Basin reclamation area that has become available since the previous independent review;
- To provide advice to assist with the department's current review of the outer bund wall leak incidents in 2011 and 2012;
- To consider the adequacy of monitoring requirements and operations; and
- To seek submissions from relevant stakeholders on the design, construction and other matters relating to the subsequent leaking of the bund wall.
The Western Basin Dredging and Disposal Project was approved in 2010 by the previous government.
Mr Hunt said it was the responsibility of the new government to investigate what went wrong and why, and to make sure it does not happen again.
