Mini-skaters show off skills at roller derby

THESE skate fanatics are smaller versions of their fellow big, scary roller derby players, but they still got their time on the track.

The Gladstone PCYC Roller Derby junior team debuted on Saturday night, with a mini game to show off the skills they've learned so far.

Junior coach Nick McPhee said she was really proud of the juniors.

"The audience was great, they were all really supportive about it which was nice," she said.

She said many of the players, aged from six-years-old to 12-years-old, had joined roller derby after attending monthly roller discos.

"It's modified rules so there isn't any hitting, and it's minor contact," she said.

"We were skating along with them making sure they were playing it safe."

Junior roller derby is held at the PCYC on Friday nights from 6pm to 7.15pm.
